DESCRIPTION:

Alvor, huge shallow estuary

The best place to learn to kitesurf in Portugal is at Alvor. The lagoon estuary is where most of the kitesurfing takes place and is part of the Alvor River. The various sand bars protect the riding area from the ocean, to create super flat water, perfect for beginner lessons. There are no rocks, reefs, trees or anything but sand in the riding area. The estuary here is large, with lots of space, so you don’t get in other peoples way and you can relax, while you are learning. Beginner IKO kite school is over 3 days, with  hours of instruction by friendly, experienced instructors, all of whom are English speaking.

The most consistent winds are in June, July and August, although, May and September are also fairly good. The weather and sea temperature in the estuary is warm throughout these months.

There are various accommodation options, walking distance to the kite school and the kite spot and Alvor itself has a traditional feel with some nice bars and local restaurants. If you want to party, nearby Lagos is just a short drive away.
